In 1939, Siam changed its name to Thailand, meaning “Land of the Free.” The new name emphasized the country’s independence and unity, distinguishing it from its colonial-era past. The change was also tied to a broader national identity movement.
Thailand is one of the few Southeast Asian countries never colonized—a fact proudly embedded in its new name. This rebranding still resonates today.
