6. Burma → Myanmar
In 1989, the ruling military junta changed the country’s name from Burma to Myanmar to reflect its multi-ethnic population. While controversial, the change was intended to shed colonial associations and project a unified national image.
Some governments still use “Burma” for political reasons. Yet globally, “Myanmar” is now widely accepted. The name shift mirrors a deeper, ongoing political transformation.
