6. University of Padua (Italy) – 1222
Padua was founded by students seeking more academic freedom than Bologna offered. It became a major Renaissance hub, known especially for medicine and astronomy. Galileo Galilei was one of its most famous lecturers. The university remains a top research center in Europe today.
