3. Lake Superior – Minnesota, Wisconsin & Michigan

Lake Superior is not only the largest Great Lake by surface area, but also the largest freshwater lake in the world by volume. It touches three U.S. states and is known for its powerful waves, rocky coastlines, and quiet forests. The lake has dozens of state parks and scenic drives, especially along Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
Photographers and nature lovers appreciate its rugged, wind-shaped shores and remote feeling. Despite its size, it remains one of the cleanest and most striking lakes in North America.
