Strong winds have pushed a wildfire on Crete’s southern coast to spread fast, forcing many tourists and locals to leave their homes.

The fire started near Achlia and split into three active fronts, reaching places like Ferma and Skinokapsala. Homes, hotels, and farms have been destroyed as the fire moved through coastal towns and nearby villages.

About 5,000 people, mostly tourists, were evacuated overnight and are now staying in sports halls and other safe spots. Some had to be rescued by boat when roads were blocked by the fire. Officials sent emergency alerts on phones, telling people to leave quickly and not to return.

The fire has made the air hard to breathe, with ash falling all over. Roads are closed to keep people safe, and hospitals are ready to help anyone who needs it.
