5. The Knife Edge, Capitol Peak
The Knife Edge on Capitol Peak in Colorado is one of the state’s most well-known and dangerous hiking sections. This narrow, rocky ridge has steep drops on each side, making the crossing very tricky and stressful for many hikers.
Falling here can be fatal, as there are no guardrails and the exposure is extreme. Experienced climbers recommend slow, careful movement and using both hands and feet for balance.
Capitol Peak is recognized for its technical difficulty and the need for solid climbing skills. The trail is not for beginners, as bad weather or slippery rocks can quickly make the route much more dangerous.
Rescuers find it hard to reach hikers in trouble on this stretch, which is part of why it regularly appears on lists of 8 hiking trails so dangerous they’re banned.
