Lake Nyos in Cameroon is a volcanic lake that can suddenly release deadly carbon dioxide. In 1986, a massive gas eruption killed over 1,700 people and 3,500 animals by suffocating them. The lake is still dangerous, with the risk of another deadly release or flood.
