2. Roanoke Colony
In 1590, more than 100 settlers disappeared from Roanoke Island with no clear trace. The only clue was the word “CROATOAN” carved into a post. There were no signs of violence or bodies found. Some believe they joined a nearby Native American tribe or faced illness or hunger.
