Lake Nyos in Cameroon looks calm but is extremely dangerous. In 1986, it suddenly released a cloud of carbon dioxide that killed over 1,700 people and thousands of animals. The gas came from a volcano beneath the lake and had built up over time. Although safety systems are now in place, the risk remains.
