6. Order of the Solar Temple
The Order of the Solar Temple began in Switzerland in 1984, inspired by the medieval Knights Templar. Its leaders believed the world would end in the 1990s.
In 1994, over 50 members died in murders and mass suicides, and cult buildings were set on fire. Despite these tragic events, the group still exists today with hundreds of secretive followers.
