3. The Cadaver Synod (897 AD)
Pope Stephen VI ordered the corpse of his predecessor, Pope Formosus, to be dug up and put on trial. The dead pope was dressed in papal robes, placed on a throne, and accused of crimes.
Why it’s bizarre:
- The trial was completely serious.
- The corpse was found guilty.
- It sparked chaos in Rome’s Church politics.
