7. Smallpox Hospital
The Smallpox Hospital on Roosevelt Island opened in 1865 as the first major U.S. hospital for smallpox patients. Designed by a well-known architect, its Gothic ruins still stand today among New York’s skyscrapers. Abandoned since the 1950s, the empty building reminds us of the deadly disease once treated there.
