4. La Rinconada, Peru
Located 16,700 feet above sea level in the Peruvian Andes, La Rinconada is the world’s highest permanent settlement. Despite its harsh climate and lack of basic infrastructure, over 30,000 people live here, mostly drawn by gold mining. The town’s remoteness and difficult conditions make daily life a physical and logistical challenge for residents.
