Alert is the northernmost permanently inhabited place in the world, just 500 miles from the North Pole. It houses a military station and weather monitoring facility. The extreme cold, constant darkness in winter, and isolation make it a challenging place to live. Supplies must be flown in, and access is limited to certain seasons.
