3. Mao Zedong
Mao Zedong led China through harsh changes that caused great suffering. His Great Leap Forward forced farmers into communes, which led to a deadly famine. Later, the cultural revolution disrupted schools and destroyed much of China’s culture. The Red Guards, young militants, enforced strict rules and spread fear across the country.
