Bhutan has long controlled tourism with a “high value, low impact” strategy. In 2022, it raised its daily tourism fee to $200 per person to discourage mass tourism. The country limits access to preserve its culture, environment, and Gross National Happiness. Independent travel is restricted, and tourists must travel with registered guides and stay in approved accommodations.
