Native to Jamaica, ackee is safe only when fully ripened and properly cooked. Unripe ackee contains hypoglycin A and B, toxins that can cause vomiting, seizures, and even coma. It’s the national fruit of Jamaica, but mishandling it can lead to what’s known as “Jamaican vomiting sickness.”
