9. Aleppo, Syria

Aleppo, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, suffered extensive destruction during the Syrian Civil War. Thousands of years of history were lost as ancient sites like the Citadel of Aleppo and the Great Mosque were damaged or completely obliterated.
The modern redevelopment efforts post-conflict are focused on rebuilding Aleppo’s infrastructure, but much of its historic charm may be permanently lost in the process.
