6. Elderberries

Elderberries are often used in jams, wines, and syrups, but their seeds, stems, and leaves contain cyanogenic glycosides, which release cyanide in the body. Eating raw elderberries can lead to severe nausea, diarrhea, and even more serious symptoms. To safely enjoy elderberries, they must be fully ripe, and cooked thoroughly to break down toxins. Straining out seeds and stems during preparation is essential.
How to enjoy without risk: Always cook elderberries thoroughly and remove seeds and stems.
