2. Ackee Fruit

Ackee is Jamaica’s national fruit, but eating it improperly can be deadly. The unripe fruit contains hypoglycin A, a toxin that causes vomiting, seizures, and dangerously low blood sugar, often called “Jamaican Vomiting Sickness.” To be safe, ackee must be fully ripe with its pods naturally opened. The bright yellow flesh can be eaten only after boiling thoroughly, while the black seeds should always be discarded.
How to enjoy without risk: Wait until the fruit naturally opens, then boil the yellow flesh and discard the seeds.
