The site faced vandalism, litter, and disrespectful behavior from careless tourists. Graffiti and touching the ancient structures contributed to ongoing deterioration. Officials restricted access to certain areas to preserve them. Some sections are now permanently roped off. The need for mindful travel became very clear here.
